Brunel Care Home
It's All Gone Curved At Brunelcare's Award Winning Sheltered Housing Scheme In Bristol
Levolux, the UK's leader in the design, manufacture and installation of solar shading solutions, has developed a unique solution for Brunelcare's new award winning Very Sheltered Housing scheme in the heart of Bristol.
Colliers Gardens in Fishponds, Bristol is a state-of-the-art project that comprises 50 very sheltered flats, and consists of five interconnecting blocks of accommodation to the ground and first floors. Facilities include a restaurant, therapy room, hair dressing salon and laundry area. The scheme provides both planned care and support services with trained staff on site 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The project has just won Retirement Development of the Year at the National Homebuilder Design Awards. It has also been short listed in this year's Housing Design Awards thanks in part to a solar shading solution designed by Levolux.
Complimenting the Internal Timber Structure
For the large lounge area of the new care home, award winning architects Penoyre and Prasad LLP specified a timber brise soleil solution. Designed to compliment the internal timber structure and, given the floor to ceiling glazing and curved nature of this South facing section of the building, Levolux were the natural choice to deliver such a striking solution.
Working closely with the architect, Levolux developed a series of 200mm wide, 2.5 metre long and 40mm thick machined western red timber blades to span the length of the exterior glazing. The brise soleil were then fixed onto a series of stainless steel brackets chemically anchored into 9 Glulam posts to create the stunning curvaceous look to this section of the building.
controlling light, glare and solar heat gain
The western red cedar brise soleil provide an effective method of controlling light, glare and solar heat gain within the care home whilst allowing natural light into the building. It also ensures outside views are uncompromised and offers a wholly sustainable choice.
Alan Holloway, project leader at Penoyre and Prasad LLP: "We are delighted with the finished product and Levolux's straightforward approach to accommodating the design requirements".
Virtually maintenance free, this type of solution can be used on both new and existing buildings.
