Exterior Shading System Provides the Perfect Inside Solution
A product, purpose designed to shade and reduce solar glare and usually installed outside offices, commercial and industrial buildings, has found a new and highly ingenious use on the inside – as a major architectural feature in the reception of a high profile Central London office.
an organic and eye catching statement
In a move to create an organic and eye catching statement, an external solar shading system from Levolux featuring Western Red cedar fins has been successfully integrated into the buildings foyer, helping to soften the existing glass, marble and steel décor.
Designed and manufactured by Levolux, leaders in solar shading solutions, the aerofoil fin system had been originally designed for use on the exterior of building to control light, glare and solar heat gain. However, with an eye to creating something that bit different, architects the Forme Partnership specified the system for the interior of the reception.
an interjection of colour and natural materials
The triangular shaped reception area extends the full height of the multi-storey building but with its extensive use of marble, glass and steel, it created an almost clinical feel and an interjection of colour and natural materials was required.
Levolux, in consultation with the architects were able to demonstrate that their external sun screening solution with fins manufactured from Western Red cedar would be the perfect solution. Panels consisting of 23 Cedar fins, in widths of 3 metres and 1.5 metres, were designed to merge perfectly with a first floor canopy and to mirror adjacent glazing.
To create an illusion of movement, the fins, which were fitted into an aluminium frame using stainless steel pins, were positioned horizontally at the bottom of each panel and were then altered gradually through 90° to be vertical at the top. As an added bonus, the fins have disguised low level heating units and have also had plasma screens seamlessly fitted into them to provide information and presentations to visitors.
Throughout the project, Lexolux worked with architects Forme Partnership and project managers Turner Townsend to ensure the system met the brief exactly.
adding a distinctive architectural statement
Virtually maintenance free, the system has been used extensively on the exteriors of both new and existing developments, successful and naturally managing temperature and helping to reduce energy costs whilst adding a distinctive architectural statement.
Available as either single piece fins or multi part they can be mounted at a fixed angle, adjustable by means of motors or be fully automated with solar controls.
Like all systems from Levolux, the system is backed with the company’s design, manufacture and installation package and can be produced in a variety of finishes including timber, mill finished, anodised or polyester powder coated to co-ordinate with the overall architectural design of any building.
