Greenwich School
Kool for kids!
Part of a flagship project, the Greenwich Millennium Village primary school is designed with sustainability and energy efficiency as key features and, as a consequence, it features a south-facing window wall to channel light and solar warmth into all the classrooms. Effective control of solar gain and glare was vital so sunshading specialists Levolux was contracted early on to supply and install external fabric awnings and internal blinds.
the solution for an added complication
Around 50 motorised Levolux Marquisolette awnings were installed externally on both the ground and first floors of the south elevation to control solar gain from summer sun. In varying sizes they follow the line of the window mullions but an added complication was that fact that the first floor overhangs the lower floor.
Some of the awnings had to project away from the face of the building by around 500mm so, as a result, the standard fixing brackets had to be extended and modified to enable them to be attached to plates supporting the glazed curtain walling.
a significant contribution to the building’s external aesthetics
Teachers can operate each awning via a key switch but an automatic override retracts them should wind speeds rise above a predetermined level. Making a significant contribution to the building’s external aesthetics, the awnings are in blue fabric and the arms on which they operate are polyester powder coated.
Chain operated roller blinds were installed throughout the school on all internal elevations to control low winter sun and glare since the building is fully IT networked with flat screens. Blackout blinds were employed in some of the teaching areas to provide dimmed conditions for children with special educational needs and also to meet the requirements of IT and video projection facilities.
The school is one of the first to comply with strenuous new codes for energy conservation, natural ventilation and daylighting in school buildings and it is claimed that it will save 56% of the energy required by current building standards.
lots of design issues but Levolux dealt with them very professionally
Andy Wall, surveying manager, Wates Construction, says: “It was a very difficult project because it is an innovative and bespoke building so there were lots of design issues but Levolux dealt with them very professionally. They were excellent at the front end – the design, working up drawings and providing information in good time”.
