LEVOLUX RELISHES CHALLENGING LEARNING CURVE


Levolux has crafted a complex curved cladding solution at Haringey Sixth Form College – keeping the architect’s vision alive where other companies said it couldn’t be done.

The solar shading specialist’s brief included a series of aluminium Fins to the exterior of the development’s amphitheatre, located at the front of the building. The structure’s curved wall, however, had proved too much for other firms, who could only offer a faceted option.

With previous experience of tackling such complex forms and a reputation for solving the unsolvable, Levolux was the natural choice for Architects Hazle McCormack Young. Meticulously formed to match the structural drawings, the 200mm aluminium Fins, with their dark grey powder coated finish, fit perfectly to the bold shape while providing a striking contrast to the building’s white exterior.

Elsewhere, further 200mm Fins are vertically stacked along the south elevation to limit solar heat gain within the building. This reduces reliance on costly mechanical cooling methods and has helped the project achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating – a highly coveted sustainability benchmark.

Levolux also fitted its Matrix XL system to the inner courtyard. Virtually maintenance free, they are fitted above each row of windows, with the horizontal Z-shaped Louvres keeping out the sun’s rays. This means solar heat gain is reduced further while adding aesthetic impact to the walkway area.
