Sedley Place
Mixed use development benefits from a mix of levolux solutions
For a major mixed used development, strategically situation just off of London’s Oxford Street, architects Fletcher Priest has specified a diverse range of products from Levolux, market leader in the design, manufacture and installation of solar shading solutions.
A £19 million project for the Corporation of London, the development provides for 1,912 square metres of commercial space, 3,058 square metres of retail space, 437 square metres of residential space and 88 square metres of leisure accommodation - all within 3 linked buildings surrounding a pedestrian walkway with public square, pavement café, fountains and soft landscaping - created to the rear of the site.
creating a feeling of openness
To create a feeling of openness Fletcher Priest chose to use glass for the walls, roof, floors and structure, including a ‘glass box’, a major architectural feature, which forms part of the store’s second and third floors, spanning the Sedley Place walkway.
protecting the buildings from solar heat gain
To protect the buildings from solar heat gain, whilst still ensuring the natural light flooded the space Fletcher Priest specified a series of timber fins from Levolux. Manufactured in Western Red Cedar, they project from the building’s roof to create a horizontal canopy and run down the front of the south facing elevation. Providing an effective barrier against solar heat gain they are fitted via stainless steel pins through the supporting steel work of the building.
a manually controlled method of shading their internal environments
To match these timber fins, Levolux also created a series of complementary Western Red Cedar sliding panels. Fitted on the exterior of the buildings, they provide occupants of the commercial and residential spaces with a manually controlled method of shading their internal environments. As required the occupants simply open the large windows and gently roll the lovured panels open or closed.
