CSC Headquarters
Another blinding result!
Transparent, glazed facades overlooking a stunning wooded site are the hallmark of the new 24,500m² headquarters for Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC) at Aldershot, Hampshire. Solar shading that allowed an outward view was a prerequisite and Levolux was brought in to design, supply and install a bespoke brise-soleil based upon its Matrix louvre system.
patented Schüco compatible bracket
The four rectangular blocks of offices on the CSC campus are laid out in an arc, their curved ends merging with the tree line. Right from the start of its early involvement in the project Levolux could offer its patented Schüco compatible bracket to tie into the uprights of the Schüco façade being used. While this considerably simplified the design process there were a number of other practical and aesthetic considerations.
the louvre blades appear to float
Each section of brise-soleil is created by a frame formed by the horizontal side arms projecting from the brackets and by the tubes that run between them at front and back. Rather than being fixed at their ends, the louvre blades appear to float within this frame but in reality are supported by thin rods that pass through them. Where required, the blades are faceted within the frame to accommodate the curve of the building.
Concerns that the cables of the window cleaning cradle, which drop down from the roof, might ‘saw’ against the brise-soleil were addressed by installing a bearing that allows the stainless steel front tube to rotate as the cables run against it. With the exception of this element the system is polyester powder coated silver RAL 9006.
system looked the best
Malcolm King, senior architect, RTKL, comments: “We chose Levolux because their system looked the best and they have performed very well. They were helpful in proposing various options and producing mock-ups of the ways in which the system could be put together. We were very pleased with the end product, it looks very good.”
