Boston Logan Airport Car Park1 200x200Boston Logan International Airport’s new ten-storey West Car Park showcases some innovative design features, including an impressive external screening solution from Levolux.

Designed by Arrowstreet architects, for Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport), the new multi-storey car park creates 1,700 spaces, arranged across 10 levels. Situated alongside a hotel, a 9/11 Memorial and surrounded by critical access roads, the car park’s exterior required special treatment to soften its visual impact.

Levolux was the preferred choice as it has an unparalleled track record, delivering screening solutions on a diverse range of multi-storey car park projects, including new-build schemes in Liverpool, London and Bournemouth and even in Gibraltar.

By using 3D modelling, the Arrowstreet design team, with support from Levolux, was able to simulate views into and out of the car park from all angles. They then decided on the optimum façade treatment for Massport.

Boston Logan Airport Car Park3 200x200Levolux’s popular Infiniti® Fin system was utilised to incorporate aerofoil-shaped fins on the south and west elevations. The fins, each measuring 500mm wide by 90mm thick, are formed from extruded aluminium and are fixed vertically to the face of the structure.

Set at an angle of 45 degrees, the fins effectively obscure views into the car park from neighbouring buildings, including a Hilton Hotel. At the same time, the openness of the fins helps to maximise daylight levels within the car park, while allowing good outward visibility for its users.

To introduce an interesting external aesthetic each fin has been finished in one of five complementary colours, from sky blue to bright green. In total, 209 fins were supplied, with a combined length of almost 1145 metres.

Boston Logan Airport Car Park4 200x200The length of each fin varies from just 2.8 metres, where they appear at intervals, extending to up to 28 metres where they appear continuous from ground floor up to roof level.

The unique design of the Infiniti® Fin system also allows fins to be cantilevered past the last support, in this case by up to 1.3 metres. This is useful for forming balustrading or to align the ends of fins with adjacent structures, such as signage or in this case a kinetic screen.

The horizontal spacing between fins also varies from just 0.9 metres at the south-west corner, increasing to 1.5 metres in the south-east corner, and up to 4.3 metres in the north-west corner. To the south, the fins are confined to lower levels, contrasting with a kinetic screen above.

Boston Logan Airport Car Park5 200x200All aluminium components were supplied by Levolux in a highly durable powder coated finish. The fins, which feature aluminium end caps, are secured back to the structure using 415 cast stainless steel brackets, all provided by Levolux.

The Massport multi-storey car park at Boston’s Logan Airport, with its distinctive screening fins from Levolux, is now fully operational.
