GETTING A FIRST IN NOTTINGHAM August 2009
When designing the new extension to Nottingham Trent University’s Chaucer Building, local architect, Maber Associates chose to incorporate an innovative new external Solar Shading system, developed by Levolux, the UK’s leading specialist.
Home to Britain’s largest student newsroom, the Chaucer Building’s extension features a modern, hi-tech design with extensive glazing. To ensure a clean, uncompromised aesthetic which could be achieved in a short time-frame, Levolux installed its new ‘Infiniti Fin’ Solar Shading system (patent pending), featuring a unique, revolutionary design.
Specially developed by Levolux, the ‘Infiniti Fin’ System represents a ‘world first’, with unique ‘invisible’ fixings that create an incredibly stable and seamless arrangement of Fins that appear to float in front of a building. The concealed fixings incorporate a patented stainless steel locking plate which is engineered to accept a range of Fins, with widths of up to 480mm. The ‘Infiniti Fin’ system is designed to support Fins with the maximum possible span and allows them to be cantilevered to extend beyond the concealed support arms at each end, creating the illusion of ‘continuous’ Fins.
Levolux installed 24 rows of 300mm wide horizontal aluminium Aerofoil Fins around the entrance of the Chaucer Building extension, shielding it from the sun’s rays and effectively minimising solar heat gain inside. The dark grey powder coated Fins help to create a cool, naturally lit reception area for staff and students and reduce the need for air-conditioning, which significantly cuts energy bills and reduces carbon emissions.
Compared to alternative ‘bird mouth’ type fixings, the ‘Infiniti Fin’ system’s revolutionary design reduces weight, has greater structural integrity and can bring significant cost savings to clients. Its flexible design makes it relatively quick and easy to install and there is the option of incorporating an effective thermal and acoustic break when it is combined with the Levolux Universal Curtain Walling Bracket.
The extension to the Chaucer building, with its additional 85 work stations, three radio studios, a TV studio and newspaper printing room, will ensure that Nottingham Trent University remains home to the next generation of journalists and broadcasters. With its ultra-modern design, enhanced by the Levolux ‘Infiniti Fin’ Solar Shading system, the new extension is sure to inspire students and provide them with a comfortable environment to continue their studies.
