The Spectrum development is a £60 million residential and commercial development on Blackfriars Road in Salford, Manchester, which benefits from a glass balustrading and screening solution from Levolux.

Most of its one and two bed apartments are equipped with private, full-length balconies, providing generous outside space and panoramic views across Manchester’s city skyline.

Levolux was invited to develop a custom balustrading and screening solution for Spectrum, which extends across the site.

The balustrading solution comprises steel brackets, aluminium support posts and toughened 10mm thick glass panels, in lengths of up to 1.6 metres. The glass balustrading encloses pre-cast concrete balcony platforms, which project up to 1.2 metres from the building envelope.

The glass balustrading, which has a height of almost 1.3 metres, is topped with a 125mm wide aluminium handrail.

In addition to the glass balustrading, Levolux also provided a series of full-height, glass privacy screens. The screens, each measuring up to 2.3 metres in height and up to 1.2 metres in depth, are formed from 10mm toughened glass panels, fixed into an extruded aluminium frame.

Each glass panel has been screen printed to give them a perforated aluminium effect, maintaining privacy while allowing natural daylight to filter through.

Levolux also supplied and installed similar glass panels for a series of Juliet balconies for lower level apartments and its XL140 Screening Louvres were used to screen plant areas on the north-facing elevations of each building, overlooking King Street.
