RETURNING TO THE VILLAGE March 2014
Following the success of London 2012, as the Athletes’ Village prepares for legacy use, an 850 space car park is already standing by, equipped with a striking screening solution courtesy of Levolux.
Situated in Stratford, east London, the Athletes’ Village is one of the most ambitious new urban developments in the UK, forming part of the Stratford City Masterplan. This has transformed a previously deprived, industrial area of London into a highly desirable residential development.
Designed by Allford Hall Monaghan Morris architects, the six storey Athletes’ Village Car Park, which was erected for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, now becomes a valuable parking facility for new and prospective residents of the Athletes’ Village.
The architects required a custom Screening Solution which would provide drivers with a striking visual reference, helping them recall the location of their vehicle on returning to the car park. As a world-leading solar shading and screening specialist, Levolux was invited to help develop an unusual and highly bespoke external screening element to be applied to each elevation.
The solution comprised a total of 627 fixed, aluminium aerofoil-shaped Fins, fixed vertically around the perimeter of the car park. The Fins, each measuring 600mm deep by 50mm thick and up to 2.6 metres in length, are formed from four extruded aluminium components. While three of the extrusions have been given a silver anodised finish, the remaining extrusion has been given a distinctive coloured and highly durable powder coating.
The coloured portion of each Fin, which is most visible from inside the car park, is different on each level, from pale blue on the first level, up to bright yellow on the 6th level. The use of colour was a critical feature as most people find it easier to recall a colour than black and white text. The Fins are fixed at an angle of 30, 45 or 60 degrees, using custom brackets. This not only creates an attractive, undulating screen across the core structure, but also maximises daylight levels throughout the building.
The Fins are aligned to obscure the view of unsightly concrete and steel structures, and vehicles parked around its perimeter. This was intended to give the car park a clean, cohesive external appearance, while retaining large openings to maximise daylight levels and provide good outward visibility.
Levolux’s range of Solar Shading and Screening products can be custom designed to satisfy almost any project brief. Levolux’s aluminium Fins are particularly popular, since they can be configured to complement any scheme with a choice of profiles and finishes.
Like all Solar Shading and Screening solutions provided by Levolux, the Fins used on the Athletes’ Village Car Park are backed by the company’s design, manufacture and installation package, along with a three year warranty.
The Athletes’ Village Car Park, with its distinctive vertical Fins from Levolux, is one of the most energy efficient in the UK, having attained a ‘Whole Project Award’ through the CEEQUAL scheme. This represents one of 14 development plots in the Athletes’ Village, to be handed over for use by its new residents – part of a successful legacy, following a remarkable Olympic Games.
