SHADES PRESCRIBED AT WARWICK
April 2010

University of Warwick CTU1 200x200The new Clinical Trials Unit building at Warwick Medical School sets new standards in the application of energy efficient, sustainable building technologies, including a custom solar shading system developed by Levolux.  The BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rated building extends the School’s facilities and provides a flexible, modern workplace for a team of academics, researchers, programmers, statisticians and administrative staff.

Specially equipped to run clinical trials on drug treatments and physical therapies, the building is designed to create the optimum environment to conduct important work that will help lead to advancements in care for those suffering with cancer,  musculo-skeletal and life threatening conditions.

University of Warwick CTU2 200x200Following a challenging brief, MJP architects responded to the client’s needs by incorporating the very latest energy saving features that make best use of natural resources. These features include a large central atrium with natural ventilation, a “green” sedum roof and perhaps the most striking of them, an external aluminium Fabricated Fin solar shading system, from Levolux.

The bespoke shading solution developed by Levolux, was applied vertically along the east and west elevations of the two storey building. This not only helps to control natural light levels, but also provides shade to exposed windows, thereby reducing unwanted solar heat gain inside the building. As a result, comfort levels are maintained without the need for expensive, energy-sapping air conditioning equipment.

University of Warwick CTU3 200x200Russell Clayton, Project Architect from MJP Architects was happy to praise Levolux for their performance. “The external solar shading is a prominent feature of the CTU building. Levolux understood our design intent and worked it through rigorously, paying particular attention to the fine engineering detail. We are very pleased with the quality of the installation on site and the final appearance of the building”.

University of Warwick CTU4 200x200Levolux installed 48 trapezoidal aluminium Fabricated Fins, divided equally along the building’s east and west elevations. The Fins are formed from 3 extruded aluminium sections and are angled to provide the optimum level of shade all year round. Installed vertically, the Fins each measure 460mm wide by 50mm deep and range in height from 5270mm on the west elevation, to 5820mm on the east elevation.

Secured to the structure with stainless steel brackets and with a natural anodised finish, the bespoke Levolux Solar Shading solution complements the overall scheme and is virtually maintenance free. As with all Solar Shading systems from Levolux, this innovative solution is backed by the company’s design, manufacture and installation package.

University of Warwick CTU5 200x200The new Clinical Trials Unit is a great example of modern, energy efficient, functional architecture, which is designed to provide the best environment in which to improve care for the public.
