Jacobs Winnersh1 200x200SEGRO’s IQ Winnersh development pushes the boundaries of urban eco-architecture by embracing the latest technology, including a custom Solar Shading solution from Levolux.

A new 133,000ft2, BREEAM rated ‘very good’ building will soon become home to engineering firm Jacobs, accommodating up to 1200 of its staff. The five storey office development, designed by EPR Architects, incorporates a number of innovative, future-proof technologies, including groundwater heating and cooling systems and a custom external Solar Shading solution.

These technologies combine effectively to reduce carbon emissions and raise energy efficiency levels. As a result, the building will generate around half the carbon emissions of an equivalent building designed in accordance with 2006 standards.

Jacobs Winnersh2 200x200A key feature of the building’s design is its external Solar Shading solution, designed and installed by Levolux, the UK’s leading specialist. In total, 211 fabricated perforated aluminium louvres were installed vertically, fixed at regular intervals in varying angles to provide shade to exposed windows on south, east and west elevations. Each perforated louvre measures 800mm wide and varies in length from 3.4 to 7.2 metres. 165 louvres, measuring 3.4m in length, were fixed along upper floors, while 46 double height louvres provide shade to ground and 1st floor levels.

Jacobs Winnersh3 200x200Fabricated from extruded aluminium components, each louvre features a perforated skin with an openness of 40%, fixed within a box section aluminium support frame. The perforated louvres are designed to protect glazed areas by reflecting and absorbing the sun’s rays, while allowing natural daylight to filter through. This prevents excessive solar heat gain, particularly during the summer months, helping to maintain a naturally cool, comfortable environment, with less need for air conditioning.

All aluminium components have been finished with an attractive, durable matt silver powder coating and, like all Solar Shading systems from Levolux, the Fabricated Louvres used on this project are backed by the company’s design, manufacture and installation package.

Jacobs Winnersh4 200x200Developed on a brownfield site, and situated to the north east of SEGRO’s IQ Winnersh, the new development for Jacobs, with its energy efficient Solar Shading solution, reinforces the park’s status as one of the most sustainable office schemes in the Thames Valley.
